Ecstatic orgasms, intense pleasure and sensuality - Tantrism aims to explore one's own body and to feel what’s going on inside. Contrary to what many think, Tantra is by no means only about sex.
What does Tantra mean?
The term Tantra or Tantrism stems from the ancient Indian language and means something along the lines of continuum or connection. Tantra is a sacred and thousands of years old philosophy in which sexuality is part of the spiritual practice. Instead of separating Eros and spirituality, Tantra assumes their interconnectedness.
An essential characteristic of Tantra is the acceptance of the human being in its entirety. In Tantra, sexuality is a means of self-knowledge and self-awareness. Space and time lose their meaning as, very slowly, the state of ecstasy occurs, while the orgasm becomes completely secondary.
The key here is the merging of body and mind. And not only within yourself, but also with the body and mind of your partner during sexual intercourse.
The main elements of Tantrism
The prevailing idea about Tantra in the western world usually shortens the philosophy to the sexual aspects. This pure pursuit of more intense sexual experiences is called Neo-Tantra or Red Tantra. Originally, however, Tantra consists of the following core elements:
- Representation and visualization of spiritual principles by means of sexual symbolism
- System of subtle energy centers (chakras) and channels (nadis)
- Work with geometrical symbols (mandala, yantra) as an expression of the macro- and microcosm
- Work with mantras and mudras
- Transformation of the body centers into spiritual places through mantras and symbols
- Incorporation of magical ideas
What is Tantra for?
Tantra increases one's sense of pleasure and in some cases leads to ecstatic orgasms that take hold of the whole body. Nevertheless, Tantra is not to be equated with a sexual practice or Kamasutra. Rather, Tantra helps you learn more about yourself and your body, to lovingly accept and embrace it.
Tantra Yoga - learning to love your own body
Tantra yoga uses classical yoga elements and adds sensual needs as an integral part. This form of yoga is practiced naked and consists of an alternation of yoga postures accompanied by the intonation of syllables, meditative phases and dynamic partner exercises. The goal of Tantra yoga is to learn to love oneself and one's own body.
Discover your own body
Tantra yoga is complemented by an active meditation of self-touch. This is not about masturbation, but the sensual touching of every part of your body. This promises new insights into your sexuality and you may discover new preferences. You may even discover that you don't need a partner to treat your body with love and passion.
The experience of Tantra does not require a partner. In fact, it makes sense to try Tantra by yourself first. Experience sensuality, intimacy and trust on your own, before you let yourself fall into connectedness together.
- Create a feel-good space where you can let yourself fall - perhaps with candles, music or incense.
- Close your eyes and gently feel every inch of your body with your fingertips. You may even discover new erogenous zones.
- Intensify the touch and massage yourself. Notice every curve, edge or even supposed blemish with gratitude and love.
- Now touch yourself as you would like to be touched by another person. Possibly your fingers will lead you to completely new insights.
Tantra - with erotic massages to climax
Tantra massage incorporates elements of yoga, bioenergetics and sexual therapy, which have a holistic effect on body and mind. This practice was developed by Andro Andreas Rothe - head of the first German Tantra Institute in Berlin - in the 1980s. However, the massages don’t have much to do with the original Tantra, but they do use some elements.
Nevertheless, in the best case Tantra massages lead to deep relaxation and new energy. Sex with the partner also improves for many couples. The reduced sexual pressure to perform - an orgasm is, after all, not the goal of the intense sensual experience - can decrease potency problems in men, and women often reach climax more often.
Yoni and Lingam - Massages in the genital area
Touching the genital area - here, yoni stands for the female, lingam for the male genital - broadens the spectrum of sexual experience. There are special grips and techniques for anus, penis and vulva massages that not only increase pleasure but also promote the flow of energy. Orgasm is by no means a must, but it is also not actively prevented.
What distinguishes a Tantra massage from an erotic massage?
Erotic massages and Tantra massages definitely have some similarities. More often than not, therefore, they are equated - although there is also a whole series of differences. The Tantra Massage Association lists the following criteria for Tantra massage:
- Intentional touch
- Even involvement of the entire body, not only the erogenous zones
- One-sidedness of touch, i.e. there is an active and passive person.
- Quality of touch, which takes place exclusively with closed eyes, i.e. optical stimuli play no role.
- Defined procedure, which is based on the flow of energy in the body and is called a ritual.
- Professional qualification of the masseurs
- Authentic encounters
