By JOY_Editorial

‘Love Is Blind’ and ‘Married at First Sight’ are hugely popular TV shows that have dominated our viewing schedules throughout 2023. We’re obsessed with watching these experiments unfold and all want to know if they really work.
Meanwhile, these popular series highlight a number of thought-provoking questions surrounding love, sex, and intimacy.

To help us better understand how realistic these shows are and answer the questions we’ve all been pondering, we are sharing fascinating insights from our community that unveil how they feel about blind love, intimacy, and sexual attraction.

Is Love Really Blind? Do You Need Sex to Fall in Love?

23.9% of people believe that love is blind, saying they also don’t need sex to be romantically involved with someone.

Lara, aka Divine Theratrix, a Conscious kink Facilitator and Qualified Counsellor from JOYclub, has shared her professional thoughts on this finding:

‘Some people do prioritise things other than sex when forming a spousal or romantic bond. There might be many reasons why this is the case, including the possibility of people identifying as being on the ace/aro spectrum of sexuality.
What’s important is that you find someone who shares your priorities. If you both place more significance on other things, this will lay great foundations for a relationship. It’s crucial that you’re on the same page.’’

However, 38.1% of people say they would not date someone without having sex with them.

Would You Marry Someone You Hadn’t Had Sex With?

As Married at First Sight’s contestants walk down the aisle, we often hear them say “I want there to be a spark, I hope I fancy them!” – they haven’t met yet, let alone had sex, so there’s no guarantee partners will have a strong intimate connection. While some people can fall in love without having sex, this begs one question; would you marry someone you’d never had sex with? 11.5% of respondents would propose to someone they hadn’t had sex with. However, only 7.1% would marry someone in this circumstance.

The vast majority of people clearly want to get intimate before tying the knot. Anna (name is changed due to anonymity), a JOYclub Member, Says:

All of my relationships start with sex; they either stay there or evolve. Marriage before sex? Nope. I need to know that all the pieces fit together.

Is Sexual Chemistry Blind – Would You Have Sex with Someone if You’d Never Seen Their Face?

Love Is Blind’s contestants strive to fall in love blindly, but can sexual chemistry be blind and based solely on your
intellectual and/or spiritual connection? According to the majority of respondents, yes, it can. 68.1% of people say they would have sex with someone in a dark room, having never seen them. Seemingly, when it comes to spontaneous nights of fun between the sheets, physical attraction isn’t always our top priority. Per this data, we are much more willing, on average, to have sex blindly than fall in love blindly.

Lara Adds:

‘Sex is important to most people. It’s so important, in fact, that 68.1% of people say they would have sex with someone they’d met in a dark room and therefore never seen. This shows that for many, sex is an activity we can enjoy without being emotionally involved or having an opinion on the likeability of the person we’re having sex with. This data also suggests that we’re more willing to have sex blindly than fall in love blindly. For many people, sex isn’t a commitment, so there’s less to lose. Again, this all comes down to your priorities and values. So long as you and your partner(s) are on the same page, you’ll be fine!’

Why Is Mystery So Arousing?

If you get turned on by mystery and anonymity, you’re not alone. This lets your imagination run wild, often inspires a surge of excitement, and lets you focus on the little you know – and like – about whoever you’re having sex with.
For some people, the complexities of emotional relationships leave them seeking a simple, no-strings-attached hook-up. The less they know, the better. If that’s something you find empowering, use 2024 as an opportunity to explore new, mysterious horizons, including masquerade sex parties and/or sex parties in the dark.

Where Can You Explore Blind Sex?

If you find the concept of blind sex and the mystery it inspires arousing, then you’ll be happy to hear there are plenty of events that can fulfil your desires across the UK. You can find a list of upcoming events here, while we also share adult events in London. Looking for something really kinky? Check out London’s most extreme fetish sex parties – BiZarre Events. Hosted by self-proclaimed ‘natural perverts’, these full-on fetish parties allow people to explore their kinks among an intelligent, extravagant crowd with bizarre sub-culture fetishes and (legal) extreme practices. At these events, blind sex would be a vanilla activity!

If you would like to attend a blind sex event for the first time, here are JOYclub’s top tips for beginners:

1. Do Your Research
Research events near you and speak to people on platforms like JOYclub about what you should expect. These events are unique and it’s important that you’re prepared.

2. Set Clear Boundaries
When attending an adult party to participate in blind sex, it’s important that you establish your preferred boundaries beforehand. Whether they include specific positions or having a conversation before you get intimate, share these preferences with all of your play partners.

3. Make Sure You’re on the Same Page as Your Partner
If you’re going to a sex party with your partner/spouse, have an open and honest conversation about your mutual boundaries beforehand. You might both have different expectations and preferences, so it’s important that you get aligned.

4. Practice Safe Sex
If you’re having sex blindly, always use a condom. Simple.

Judith Langer, communication manager at JOYclub, about the Popularity of Blind Sex at Kink Events:

JOYclub is a safe place for anyone looking to explore sex and fetishes, including singles and couples alike. Our members attend events like masquerade sex parties where they can’t see their partner(s) face or body – they go to enjoy blind sex because that’s what turns them on. For a lot of people, this sense of mystery and anonymity is hugely arousing!
