Self-bondage and Shibari

A Friday full of Ropes

You know that at JOYclub we love organising cool events. This time, we decided to give away free tickets to see shibari live at Espacio Nos, a creative space specially designed for LGBTQI+ individuals and women. Couldn't make it to the self-bondage shows and shibari performance? Enjoy the videos!

Self-bondage and Shibari

Cecilia Bizzotto is a sociologist, ambassador and content creator for JOYclub Spain. She speaks about sex and pleasure using a feminist approach, encouraging a destigmatised view of fantasies and different sexualities.

Why did JOYclub collaborate with Espacio Nos?

  • Because Espacio Nos is a unique place. It is an artistic laboratory designed for inspiration, creation, and experimentation. An interdisciplinary project that brings together different types of art, including Shibari.

  • Because it focuses on socioeconomically marginalised communities and groups, LGBTQI+ individuals, women, and people who identify with femininity, and consequently those who consider themselves allies.

  • Because it is a space with rules aimed at making it a safer, healthier, and more inclusive place for people to attend activities, learn, and share.

How to get started in Shibari

Both at Nos Space as in other learning spaces, you have various options to get started in the Japanese art of ropes:

  • Before diving into this world and investing your time and money, it’s a good idea to attend a Shibari performance.
  • You can join an introductory workshop. It’s very important to learn the basics of consent and negotiation, anatomy, how to avoid injuries… to prevent scares. Remember: Shibari is not without its risks.
  • It’s highly recommended to attend Shibari jams. These are community improvisation spaces where you can practice freely, socialise, draw, and have fun. For instance, Espacio Nos offers mixed and non-mixed jams (for LGBTQI+ & Women only).

Reviews from Event Attendees

Seeing shibari not tied to BDSM, but more as an artistic expression, was a fantastic experience. I had never seen self-bondage and was really surprised by how the artist interacted with the audience with her gaze, and everything she was able to convey. The complicity between Pauline and Marta was also extraordinary
