Entering Sub-Space

Discovering the power and vulnerability of BDSM with Poppy Scarlett

In Playful TV's latest micro-documentary, I interview Poppy Scarlett about what it’s like to enter the altered mental state sub-space. As a submissive and Switch, Poppy offers insights into how she reaches this state. I also invite JOYclub members to watch the uncensored version, as I lead a D/s session to demonstrate Poppy’s transition into sub-space, revealing a somewhat emotional complexity and vulnerability.

Entering Sub-Space

When the two journalists Amanda and Filip Sandström Beijer moved to Berlin they were seeking a platform that introduced the city to them without blur. Even though there were many incredible platforms and magazines, they wanted something else, something that focused on the people behind the projects, this search finally lead to the creation of Playful Magazine – an ongoing celebration of the city that gives space for conscious, smart and creative people who are setting a social tone more than just living an individual lifestyle. A tone where freedom and passion are essential and which is also outspoken as to what politics we will accept, thus making a good example of a democratic and conscious society for the rest of the world.
Sub-space is like floating—it’s a space where everything outside of the moment fades away. You’re fully present and vulnerable.

What is Sub-Space?

Sub-space is often described as a trance-like mental state that submissives may experience during intense physical or emotional play. In the Playful TV documentary on YouTube, Poppy Scarlett describes it as, "Sub-space is like floating—it’s a space where everything outside of the moment fades away. You’re fully present and vulnerable."

Sub-Space Key Facts

  • Often feels like floating or being in a dreamlike state.
  • Triggered by intense physical or emotional play in BDSM scenes.
  • Relies heavily on trust and a sense of safety between partners.

Being submissive isn't about giving up your power. It’s about choosing to surrender in a controlled environment where trust is key.

Vulnerability and Strength in Submission

A common misconception is that submission is passive. In reality, it requires emotional strength and trust. As Poppy shares, "Being submissive isn't about giving up your power. It’s about choosing to surrender in a controlled environment where trust is key."

Domme Session: Witnessing Sub-Space

In our D/s session, I guide Poppy into sub-space, where she describes the feeling as a "melting away" of external pressures. Her demeanor shifts, revealing the emotional release that submission can bring. Observing this shift was a powerful experience for me. I hope it will be for you as well, when watching it.

When I’m in sub-space, the outside world disappears. It’s just me and the moment.
